The Time I Wrote a Monologue

The time I wrote a monolog was actually a really fascinating experience. I thought that writing monologs was going to be really easy, but it turned out to be really hard. The part of writing the monolog wasn’t the hard part, but the fact that the monolog had to be a comedy monolog was the hardest part. It took me about three weeks to figure out at less three possible topics that might be funny for me to interpret in a good monolog. After three weeks I came up with some good topics for my monolog, which were zombie jokes, commercials and dumb blondes.

Since the monolog was on Spanish, zombie jokes use to be very funny. I started with a zombie joke where zombies tried to be normal humans. They were trying to brush the teeth they have left with a brand new tooth brush while their teeth kept falling of their zombie mouth. Then I thought of it and I realized it was not so funny after all, it was actually kind of weird and revolting. So I tried another zombie joke. I thought about zombie brains. Their brain were so small that only fact of thinking of eating human brains will make their brains blow out. But it was not funny. I kept trying to figure out something to make this joke funny enough, so this time zombies where going to a party and they were supposed to look adorable with their make-up on and brand new trash dresses. But after reading it over and over again I realized it wasn’t funny either. I also realized that probably writing a monolog about zombies and trying to make them funny was actually not a very good idea. So I decided to write about another thing.

Suddenly I remembered I had seen a funny commercial on the T.V. the other night. “That actually might work!” I said while typing the name of the commercial on the YouTube web site. Once I founded the commercial I watched it a couple of times to gather some ideas. So I write a commercial about a “healthy coffee” named “It’s Berry Ugly” that would make you lose weight from your feet to your round cute red little cheeks. This coffee, which came from a nasty bad odor place, was supposed to make you lose weight and make your skin shine bright like a diamond, just like Rihanna said on her song. Furthermore it was supposed to make you young again. We all know that’s fake because there is nothing in the world, not even a coffee I just made up, that can make a person young again. Since it was just a make believe commercial I thought it might actually be kind of funny. It was kind of hilarious because people these days will buy anything that says “You will be young again!” or “You are going to lose weight!” and stuff like, that without caring if it might actually kill them for it probably has poison. I thought about it for a while and I decided not to write about a commercial any longer. So I tried another topic.

Last I tried to write about dumb blonds. Some blond girls are so dumb and so hilarious that I might actually be able to pull something out of it. I starts to write the monolog about a dumb blond who questioned about why she couldn’t drive if she had pass her driver’s license. It was true that she went 18 times to take the written test and it took her 35 time to get her driving test right, but it was only because nobody had told her that she wasn’t supposed to crash into the little orange  traffic cones. Instead of taking the blame for all the damage, she suggested that the agency should post a note on each little orange cone requesting to please be careful and beware of the orange cones since thery’re not supposed to be knocked out. She also said that with those improvements she might have actually fail 20 times instead of 35. After interrogating about it, she kept on questioning some more. This time she was interrogating about cooking. Why isn’t she allow to cook if she is a responsible adult? She says that the other day she was cooking an egg and it didn’t burned. Actually the wall paper burn, the stove burned and the floor burned, but the egg didn’t burned and that was the main purpose. After that she said she might actually consider to start her own babysitting service. I personally won’t trust her with my kids, or my car, or even my house. She might be responsible but something tells me I shouldn’t trust her, and we all know what I mean.

I presented and interpret my monolog and it had a great response from the class. The people were actually laughing about the story I was acting out. After so many tries, with so many topics to choose, and so many complications, my monolog was actually really good. It was hard work to choose between the three topics I had chosen, which were zombie jokes, commercials and dumb blonds, but it did paid off with good laughs and lots of enjoyment. I made such a great monolog that I didn’t only passed the class but I figure out that I am really good interpreting dumb blondes. Making this monolog was actually really fun and it felt good to know that people actually liked it and had a good time while I preformed it.

                                                         My Culture, My Home

Many people think that, by being Hispanic, we are all going to be the same, but they are wrong. Being Hispanic means that we speak Spanish and that we are all united under the same language and similar cultural habits; however, each culture is unique and different at their own, especially when we are talking about the Puerto Rican culture. From the way we dance, the things we eat, and the way we celebrate Christmas, we can say that Puerto Ricans have a very special culture.

Puerto Rico is known as a very tropical place, full of beautiful beaches as well as rhythm. Since our history started, we have been exposed to music, and music takes a big place in our traditional behavior. Two of the most traditional dances of Puerto Rico are “Bomba” and “Plena”. When we talk about “Bomba” we can say that it is no other that a musical expression created in Puerto Rico at the end of the 17th century, by West Africans and their descendants who worked the colonial sugar plantations along the coast of Puerto Rico. Through fiery drum rhythms and improvised dance, the cane workers released feelings of anger, resistance, and sadness about their condition. However, “Plena” it is not different than “Bomba”, although it is also special; “Plena” developed from “Bomba” music around the beginning of the 20th century in southern Puerto Rico and its lyrics are narrative, different from “Bomba” which were sung. They convey a story about events, address topical themes, often comment on political protest movements, and offer satirical commentaries. In Puerto Rico the “Salsa Dance” is one of the most popular contemporaneous dances. “Merengue” and “Bachata” are also part of the contemporaneous dances of our culture but these were created by other Hispanic cultures.

Our Puerto Rican culture is also known by our traditional food. From “bacalaitos”, “alcapurrias”, “sorullitos” “empanadillas”, and “mofongo”, during the road trips, to “arroz con gandules”, “lechón asado”, and “pasteles” at Christmas, Puerto Ricans have food in every single corner of the “100 x 35” island, as we call it. It is traditional to stop by a food stand or “chinchorro” and enjoy some delicious fried food, such as the ones mentioned above.

Another thing Puerto Ricans are known for is the wild parties we usually throw as the year goes on. One of the most fantastic parties is the Christmas Party. Christmas usually starts on December 24th with the Christmas Eve’s celebration. However, in Puerto Rico we usually start Christmas right after Halloween and days before the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. In addition, Christmas, in the United States, usually ends right after the New Year’s celebration; nevertheless, Puerto Ricans still have something else to celebrate after the New Year: “Los Tres Reyes Magos” on January 6th. We can say that a Puerto Rican Christmas lasts forever because it is always a celebration. Christmas in Puerto Rico does not end after “Los Tres Reyes Magos”, we still celebrate it for two or three more weeks.

Being a part of such a wonderful culture has great rewards, such as parties, celebrations and a lot of free time to have with our families and friends. Food, music and dancing are a big part of our culture because it is what makes us who we are and what makes us different. Being Latino it is not an easy job; however, I am proud of being from where I am: My Puerto Rico, My Culture, My Home.

                                                           Just my Mom

I know one of the bravest people in the world, and I’m proud to call her mom. She might not have saved the world from danger, or even became president, but she is a leader, who had influence me to become a leader myself, and to be who I want to be. Since I was a little girl, she had worked hard, alone, to take care of me and my brother. Her name is Sylvia De León-Valentín. Right now, we might not have the same last names, since she remarried two and a half years ago, but she is still my mother. A couple of month ago, she got a serious surgery where she discovered the she was a diabetic, just like me. Ever since she found out she was diabetic, she became really creative whenever she cooks healthy meals for all of us. My mom is a creative cook, a brave mother, and a great leader.

My mom does the most creative things when it comes to healthy eating. She knows that the only fruit I will ever eat is the banana. She always finds a way in order for me to eat more fruits. One of the things she does is blend them. She picks up some fruit that might tests almost the same and blends them all together creating a fruit smoothie. Another thing that she does, that is actually really good, is a fruit dip. We can eat it with cookies or crackers, depending on the occasion. These are really creative ways of eating healthy, don’t you think?

My mom is not only creative, but she is also brave. She had to take care of my brother and me, by herself, ever since we were born. Being a single mother with two children and two jobs can actually be really hard. But even though she worked so hard and so much, she always had a beautiful smile right upon her face. She never let her problems bring her down. Eventually she found a man who respected her and us, her children, and got married. Even though she cannot have more children, once she got married, she automatically ended with four children: her children and her husband’s children. Now days, she has a house full of happiness as she always wanted.

When we talk about great American leaders, we eventually picture: Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Malcom X, Mahatma Gandhi, and more. We I talk about American leaders I picture my mom. A leader is a person that has the capacity to deal with a group of people and guide them in the right path; someone to look up to; a role model. My mom is a leader. When I was eight years old, my mom became the leader of my Girl Scout troop. Everyone looked up to her. She had so many responsibilities but, she took care of them one by one without overwhelming. Do you know how hard is to take care of a troop of eight-to-ten year old girls? I know. That’s why she became my role model. As I grew up, beside her, I learn to become a leader myself. Once I enter the young adulthood phase, a practiced my leadership skills by working with my community. It was actually really fun helping others. By working with other I got rewarded with badges. I also got rewarded with a bronze medal at the age of fourteen. Once I became old enough to be a fulltime leader, my mom’s boss made me a staff member of the Caribbean Girl Scout Council. I was a  big part of every Girl Scout activities ever since. Every little girl around loved to be around me and I also loved to be surrounded by those little girls. I became a leader.

Because of my mom’s braveness, I became brave. Because of my mom’s creativity, a developed my own creativity. Because of my mom’s leadership, I became a leader. My mom might not have saved the world, she might not be famous, she might not even be the president, but she is my mom. My mom is my guardian. My mom is my nurse and my nutritionist. My mom is my best friend. My mom… she is just my mom.

My Mom’s Birthday Surprise

My mom’s birthday was last August 18, 2014. I decided I was going to make a homemade cake for her to surprise her. While she went out with some friends to celebrate her birthday, I started to bake the cake. I took the cake box and read all the instructions as I mixed the ingredients. It was actually my first time baking a cake. I baked a round cake and ten cupcakes. I also made her a homemade “happy birthday” banner. Everything turn out perfect, and she really loved everything I made for her.

My Mom’s Birthday Surprise

My mother’s birthday was last August 18th, 2014. I decided I was going to make a homemade cake for her birthday. While she went out with some friends to celebrate her birthday, I started to bake a beautiful cake for her to see when she came back home. I took the cake book and read all the instructions. I didn’t knew what to do! It was my first time baking a homemade cake and I was worried it might come out wrong. I followed the instructions one by one. Then, I got all the ingredients and started to mix them as it was written on the box. I separated the batter into a round cake and ten cupcakes. After that, I placed them on the oven and waited until they were done. While I waited, I also made her a homemade happy birthday banner to décor the living room’s wall. Finally, the cake was done. I took it out of the oven and check that it was ready and that I didn’t had mess it up. It was prefect! I let it cool down for half an hour, then, I iced the cake. Finally, everything was done and set for her surprise birthday party. Everything turn out to be perfect, and she loved everything I had made for her. It urn out that I was a good cook after all.
